Are you thinking about a career as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)? Or are already in the process of becoming one? If so, you may be wondering "What is one of my responsibilities as an RBT?"
At Nova Supports, an RBT is arguably one of the most important parts of ABA therapy, if not the most important. RBTs give one-on-one attention to people with disabilities, such as autism. RBTs help them improve problem behaviors and learn new skills.
Here's a breakdown of what you can expect on the job, how the training works, and why this career can be so rewarding.
Understanding the Responsibilities in the Role of an RBT
As an RBT, you work directly with clients, implementing behavior intervention plans that have been developed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Your primary responsibility is to follow these plans to help your clients learn essential skills—anything from communication to daily living skills—while also working on reducing challenging behaviors.
You'll be responsible for taking data at each session to give the BCBA something to look at and see if the client is improving.
At Nova Supports, we emphasize a naturalistic and developmentally appropriate approach, which means you’ll be working in real-life settings such as the client’s home, community, or our ABA Day Clinic in American Fork. This hands-on work makes a big difference in the lives of individuals with autism. You'll be making a world of difference for them.
What Can You Expect on the Job?
When you begin as an RBT at Nova Supports, you'll be part of a supportive team dedicated to helping individuals with autism reach their full potential. You’ll be collaborating closely with your BCBA, who will provide you with the necessary guidance, training, and support.
In a typical day, you might be:
Implementing the behavior plan designed by the BCBA.
Recording data on the client’s progress.
Providing positive reinforcement for appropriate behaviors.
Assisting the client with social skills development, communication, and other life skills.
Managing challenging behaviors using the techniques outlined in the behavior plan.
Your ability to consistently apply the treatment plan and monitor progress is essential to ensuring that the client is on the right path.
How Long Is RBT Training?
Before starting as an RBT, you'll need to complete the required 40-hour training.
This training will cover key areas such as:
behavior reduction
skill acquisition
data collection
ethical considerations
At Nova Supports, we offer support through this process. If there is any additional support you need, just reach out to your supervisor and we will help you.
After the training, you will need to pass the RBT Competency Assessment and a certification exam to officially become an RBT. Once certified, you'll work under the supervision of a BCBA who will continue to provide mentorship and oversight to ensure you succeed.
Every RBT will receive a tablet to use for data collection and a backpack.
Ongoing Support and Growth
At Nova Supports, we believe in providing continuous support for our team members. We offer ongoing training, supervision, and opportunities for professional development. As an RBT, you'll have access to mentorship and regular feedback to help you improve your skills and grow in your role. There’s also potential to move up within the company if you’re interested in pursuing further certification, such as becoming a BCBA.
(ABA is an ever-growing industry, and there will always be a need for BCBAs!)
