How to Become a Registered Behavior Technician: Step-By-Step
Do you want to get paid playing with a child all day? Sounds like fun, right?
If you do think that working with individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities would be enjoyable and rewarding, Nova Supports would love you to work with us as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
What does this entail? How do you become a registered behavior technician?
As an RBT, you'll work under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to implement behavior intervention plans and help clients improve their social, communication, and adaptive skills. We like to accomplish this through play-based therapy techniques for young kids. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to become an RBT, along with how Nova Supports can help you get started.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements
Before you can start the process, you need to meet a few basic requirements set by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). You must:
be at least 18 years old
have a high school diploma or equivalent
pass a background check
Step 2: Complete the 40-Hour RBT Training
The next step is to complete a 40-hour training program that covers all the essential knowledge areas outlined by the BACB. This training will teach you the core principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), data collection, behavior reduction, and how to implement intervention strategies effectively.
At Nova Supports, we offer this 40-hour RBT training program at no cost to you. We believe in investing in our team members and helping them get the proper education and skills needed to succeed in this field. Once you are hired by Nova Supports, we will pay you while you go through this training.
Step 3: Pass the RBT Competency Assessment
After completing the 40-hour training, you must pass a competency assessment conducted by a qualified BCBA. This assessment is hands-on and evaluates your ability to perform various tasks essential to your role as an RBT, such as implementing behavior plans, using reinforcement strategies, and documenting behavior data.
At Nova Supports, our experienced BCBAs will provide guidance and mentorship to help you prepare for this assessment. Your mentor/supervisor will help make sure you understand the test contents and give you confidence to pass the exam and be a good RBT with clients.
Step 4: Apply to the BACB
Once you have completed the training and passed the competency assessment, you need to apply to the BACB to take the RBT exam. You'll submit your application, pay the exam fee (which Nova Supports will reimburse you for), and provide documentation showing that you've met all the requirements. The BACB will review your application, and if approved, you can schedule your exam.
Step 5: Pass the RBT Exam
The final step to becoming an RBT is to pass the official RBT exam, administered by the BACB. The exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions that cover the key areas of ABA practice, including measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, and professional conduct. To prepare, you can use study guides, take practice exams, and review the concepts you learned during your training.
At Nova Supports, we encourage our trainees to study thoroughly and provide resources to help them succeed. Once you pass the exam, you are officially an RBT!
Step 6: Start Your Career as an RBT
